Umeya: A Taste of Japan in NJ

This weekend, I decided to come home. As a treat, my parents decided to take me to our favorite Japanese restaurant: Umeya in Cresskill, NJ. We have been coming to Umeya for literally as long as I can remember. (about 21 years..if I did my math right...) The owners, a husband and wife, started off as my father's patients. My dad has known them since they were caterers, before they opened their restaurant.

As I said, my family have been coming to Umeya for 21 years, and there is a reason for that. Hands down, the best Japanese food in Bergen County. If you live in Northern NJ and you love Japanese food, THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO. The food is authentic, delicious, and most importantly, the sushi is sublime. The fish is as fresh as can be and Mr. Umeya's skill in preparing the sushi/sahsimi is awe-inspiring. He is a true professional. Before opening Umeya, he worked at a variety of sushi restaurants in both Japan and New York City. Another reason to go, both Mr. and Mrs. Umeya are lovely people and fun to chat with! 

Some meal highlights....
 For an appetizer, I ordered fried rick shrimp with some fried asparagus and red pepper. This was served with a spicy mayonnaise sauce.
For an appetizer, my dad ordered the simmered red snapper head. This is a very traditional and flavorful Japanese dish.

One of my favorite things to eat is "ama-ebi" or sweet shrimp. They are so sweet and juicy. These are huge! Can't wait to eat them! 
Not all Japanese restaurants do this, but I am delighted that Umeya does. Believe it or not, fried shrimp heads are DELICIOUS! Yum yum yum!

Last month, my best friend (E) and I ventured out into the outskirts of Willamsburg to try a new restaurant called "Shalom Japan." Gordon Ramsay's Cheesy Potato Dauphinoise

I am fairly impressionable --- at least when it comes to cooking. When I see a recipe or a dish that intrigues me, I become obsessed and determine to give it a go. I have been obsessively watching Come Dine With Me  for at least one month and a dish that keeps popping up is: Potato Dauphionoise. I've eaten this side dish a couple times in my life, but not recently. It looked so delicious and easy to make, and I was determined to try my hand at this posh looking side. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Where Greek Mythology Comes to Life

Last week, I finally made it to the movie theater to see Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. I don’t care what anyone says, I LOVED IT. I loved the film, I love the Percy Jackson franchise, I love the Rick Riordan books, and I cannot wait for the next book ( The Titan’s Curse), to be made into a film! For those who may be unfamiliar with Percy Jackson, allow me to briefly explain. Percy Jackson is essentially Harry Potter , but the magic has been swapped for ancient Greek mythology. The protagonist of the series, Percy Jackson, is a demi-god and son of Poseidon --- god of the Seas. Percy lives at Camp Half Blood and is often accompanied by his best friends, Grover (a satyr) and Annabeth Chase (daughter of Athena). These three, along with a variety of other characters, go on quests and do everything in their power to stop the return of the evil Titan, Kronos, who is trying to resurrect himself and overthrow Olympus.
