Lacock: The Real Life "Cranford'
After leaving Bath, our journey back to London began. Rather than a straight shot drive, we stopped at several scenic spots on the way back to the city. It was a lot of fun! Our first stop was the quaint village of Lacock. This tiny village looks like it's been frozen in time and has been used as a filming location for several period dramas including "Cranford" and "Pride and Prejudice" (Colin Firth BBC miniseries version).
Wikipedia writes, "Lacock is a village in the rural county of Wiltshire, England… The village is owned almost in its entirety by the National trust, and attracts many visitors by virtue of its unspoiled appearance…Lacock Abbey was founded on the manorial land, by Ela (Countess of Salisbury) and established in 1232." In addition to these fun facts, "William Henry Fox Talbot created the first ever photographic negative in 1835, taken of a small window at his home of Lacock Abbey" (taken from our itinerary).
At the time, we were not aware of Lacock's history and fame, but what we did know was that this village is really beautiful! It is so rustic and untouched by time. I imagine that the Cranford team doesn't have to do much transformation, since Lacock already looks like an idillic country village! We couldn't stop taking pictures!!!
The town church
Gorgeous house selling flowers
I made a cute friend
Yes, I'd say Lacock is quintessentially English
Is that a country bakery, or what?!
We were not alone… so many other tourists!
We were told that this pub has been featured in many shows and movies
Lacock Abbey. Sadly, due to time constraints, we were unable to tour this home.
I can totally see this in Cranford!
I love this car. So vintage.
Beautiful WWI memorial
Lacock is a little bit off the beat and path, but it's worth visiting. The village is quite small, about a 20 minute walk for the whole village, but there is a lot to see. If you enjoy period British dramas, like Cranford, you should definitely check this place out!
